1. How were you first introduced to CrossFit?
I was first introduced to CrossFit from my sister who did it for bit and I thought it was mostly about bodybuliding. I had no idea what it was, then my friend Amy would mention it to us at girls night and wanted me to join. I was hesitant at first, and all I could hear her say is “Do you want to be 70 years old and not be able to get up from the toilet?” Ha ha.. Don’t know why that stuck in my head. So I ended up joining and now I am hooked. I have made it part of my life now and I can’t imagine my life without it.
2. If you never had to do this exercise again, it would be awesome.
Running, running and more running. It’s just not for me. But I have been doing a bit of it now in quarantine but still not a huge fan. I admire people who can do it all the time. Also, wall balls & thrusters I wouldn’t miss one bit!
3. If I had to make up my own WOD, it would be?
No running of course! Maybe more weight training with pull ups, power cleans, deadlifts, and snatches and hand stand pushups. I might even throw in some devil presses???
4. Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, hobbies, etc
I am originally from Albuquerque but have lived in Denver(2 years), then New York City (5 years) for work. I am an Electrical Engineer with emphasis in IT, married, and have 2 kids. I have mostly worked in the IT field and love anything computer related. I have my own small businesses on eBay, Amazon, Mercari, & Poshmark reselling unique vintage items and clothing and helping people through social media start their own small businesses with reselling. I love the outdoors, gardening, swimming, fishing, and my family and I love to travel and explore new places together. Right now we are mostly hiking, biking, playing board games, making Tik Tok videos and camping in our backyard for fun!
5. My proudest accomplishment is (doesn’t have to be CrossFit related)
Learning to navigate in this new world we live in right now. From homeschooling, being a chef, running a business and managing life through this pandemic has made me look at things in a whole new light.
I lived in New York City 4 blocks from the twin towers during 911 and recently lost my mom a year ago and so life is a gift everyday and we have to live it to the fullest. I don’t take life for granted and am grateful for every day I get. I am trying to make the most of this year and not dwell on what we can’t do or don’t have right now.
My kiddos and my mom’s spirit have also been guiding me through this time together and have taught me that since we are forced to slow down now, make the most of each and everyday since it is all we have right now. I have really made it a point to make time for myself and really get stronger by doing as many workouts as my bod can handle. It has helped me emotionally and physically through this time and I thank BCCF for making this happen.
6. My favorite cheat/ indulgence meal food is?
Candy bars and buttered popcorn.
7. What do you love about Bear Canyon CrossFit?
I love the community and the PEOPLE because you always feel included. All the coaches and staff are so encouraging and supportive throughout your journey here no matter where you start out at. I have met some really great guys and gals here and everyone is so encouraging and supportive. You never feel like your the odd person in the room and they never push you to do weights or exercises you don’t feel comfortable doing. They help you modify to your ability and cheer you along during those hard to get through WODs! And the workouts are never the same so you can look forward to a variety of chosen workouts and never get bored. Absolutely awesome!
8. What would you tell a friend who wanted to try CrossFit?
I actually had a friend join last year and I went with her to a few classes until she felt comfortable. I still go with her occasionally and we have fun working out together. She has loved the experience and has made so many friends. I love telling people about CrossFit and how it has helped me and that it is not your typical gym membership. You get a community of people that become your family.
9. What has been your biggest accomplishment at Bear Canyon?
Getting into a routine of going to the gym more regularly, pushing myself to be stronger, learning to do a rope climb (took me like a year), and multiple pull ups. Recently during quarantine I squat cleaned my heaviest weight! I almost cried….
10. How has BCCF helped you during the Covid?
The staff and coaches have all been extremely accommodating during this whole time and made sure we could still workout virtually even though we couldn’t work out in the gym. I was amazed at how fast they got the gym up and running once everything shut down. They worked tirelessly to bring us all together during this hard time and still had different options for different classes at every level. The communication was seamless, and now are still working so hard on the reopening and making everyone feel comfortable and safe in every situation. Thank you guys for everything!! Keep up the awesome work! Couldn’t of done it without you….
