CHRISTY:

How I was introduced to HIIT/Crossfit:

Pete had been crossfitting for a few years and I had zero interest in it.  One day he told me about a new class, XY, and they were offering a free trial week.  I decided to try it.  That was my first time meeting Mark and Amy.  I met Mark dressed as Pooh and Amy as a 90’s aerobic workout chic, good times…..Halloween WOD.  After a few months, these two convinced me to give crossfit a try and I have been hooked since.

If I never had to do this one exercise ever again, I would be just fine:

Overhead squats for sure, with snatches being a close second.

If I had to makeup my own WOD, it would be:

I have been digging the partner WODs lately.  The one a few weeks ago with slamballs, box jumps, wall balls, knees to elbows, KB swings, burpees and running was fun.

Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, hobbies, etc):

Pete and I are both from Pueblo, CO. We met in high school and were married after college graduation. There is a lot of teeth talk that goes down at our house as he is a dentist and I am a dental hygienist.  We lived in Cleveland for four years while Pete went to dental school and moved to Albuquerque in 2008.  Albuquerque is our home now as he owns two dental practices, one in NE heights and one in the SW part of town.  We have 4 littles; the oldest is a 9-year-old girl and then three very busy boys who are 7, 5 and 2.  I get to stay home with these little people and am able to clean teeth in one of our offices one day a week. There is no time for hobbies at that point, but I do love to travel.  When Pete and I get to escape by ourselves we are usually kayaking, hiking, paddle boarding, or camping somewhere new in the US.

My proudest accomplishment:

I wouldn’t say proudest, but I have accomplished the task of being a busy Mom of 4 while creating a healthy lifestyle for my family and making the gym happen 4-5x/week.  Oh yeah, and pull-ups 🙂

My favorite cheat meal/food:

Just one?!?! A good steak! A good burger! Brownie and Ice Cream! Pizza!

Favorite Song to work out to:

Anything but rap 😉

What I love about BCCF:

Bear Canyon Crossfit has surpassed any and all of my expectations in a gym.  I never thought that I would still be here almost 2 ½ years later.  If it weren’t for the amazing owners, coaches and members, I would still be fantasizing about running a 5k and doing A pull up.  Mark, Amy and Rebekah are three of the hardest working people I know and I am proud to call them my friends.  The coaches at BCCF push you, help you set goals and help you achieve them.  Also, something I have never been good at.  The members are amazing and I am grateful to have met so many fun, new friends over the years.  Getting to work out with these people and seeing familiar faces in every class we come to, makes it feel like home.  Thanks and way to go BCCF!

My “swole” mate:

Is Pete.  I do love working out with someone that has come so far in crossfit, has many personal achievements and motivates me to be better.  He’s great and fun to sweat with!  We only work out together once a month, maybe twice if we are lucky.  Before we start hashing out the work, teeth and kid talk, we always talk about our workout from the day.  On many levels, this probably keeps us from fighting and keeps our marriage going in the right direction 😉

PETER:

How I was introduced to HIIT/CrossFit:

It took about two years of Stew Anderson prodding me to do it. Finally, when I heard that they were opening a box on Eubank and Osuna I decided to try it out. (2013)

If I never had to do this one exercise ever again, I would be just fine.:

You can keep overhead squats. I don’t need them.

If I had to makeup my own WOD, it would be:

Running, double-unders, pull-ups, sit-ups, wall balls, and burpees. Something long and for time. I like low weight/high volume.

Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, hobbies, etc) :

Christy and I have been married for 14 years. We have four kids (one girl and three boys) between the ages of 9 and 2. We started dating in High School and both ended up getting into Dentistry (Dentist and Dental Hygienist). My favorite hobbies are mountain biking and skiing- though I don’t have much time to do either.

My proudest accomplishment is (doesn’t have to be CF related):

I always struggled with weight. About the time I started CrossFit, I started eating better and began to enjoy exercising. I’ve lost over 50lbs, kept it off, and feel strong.

My favorite cheat meal/food is:

Pizza and Ice Cream!!

What is your favorite song to workout to?:

Rock and Roll- the good stuff.

What I love about Bear Canyon Crossfit:

BCCF has definitely helped me to improve my life. I really enjoy belonging to such a great community of people who share similar goals and attitudes. The owners, coaches, and members have become friends who I enjoy spending time with every day (even at 5:30am).

My swole mate:

Christy and I are partners in just about everything; marriage, kids, dentistry, business, and now CrossFit. When we are both exercising and feeling healthy our relationship is better. We support each other in our efforts to eat clean and become stronger. Our favorite CrossFit workouts are partner WODs that we get to do together. We’ve also both discovered that we may be a little competitive- especially against each other.
