Athlete of the Month

Luke Hankner

How I was introduced to CrossFit:

No one really introduced me. I literally saw the open on tv and said I want to do that!

If I never had to do this one exercise ever again, It would be awesome:

I could do without thrusters. (we all can)

My proudest accomplishment:

Having been a carpenter/framer for 20 years. 2nd best would be shooting 69 in Golf.

My favorite cheat meal/food is:

Lots of ice cream.

What is your favorite song to workout to?:

I’m not sure about a specific song but Gangster rap gets me going!!

What I love about Bear Canyon Crossfit:

I have been at BCCF from the beginning (3 1/2 yrs.) I am very grateful of the quality in ownership of the gym, and professionalism of the coaching. I love the nucleus of members that we have that work hard every time they step foot in here. These are the type of motivated folks l want to be around. Bear canyon is the best and it shows through their quality of athletes.

Christian Erb is the AOTM!

How I was introduced to CrossFit:

I heard about BearCanyon through Star88. Steve & Dex had Amy on the radio and she would talk about Crossfit

Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, hobbies, etc) :

If I had to makeup my own WOD, it would be:  Back squats and pull ups.

My favorite cheat meal/food is:  Sushi. It’s the best.

What are your favorite jams to workout to?:  There isn’t a favorite. Just as long as there is music.  It is very odd when I walk into the gym and it’s quiet.

What I love about Bear Canyon Crossfit:  No one looks down on you for what you can’t do, and instead, encourage and push you do do better.  The coaches are amazing and I couldn’t ask for a better gym.

Oswaldo and Katherin

Oswaldo

How I was introduced to CrossFit:

I was introduced to CrossFit in Mexico, after watching CrossFit games, I decided to start training at a small gym with not too much equipment but trying our best. This is where I met Katherin and married her.

If I never had to do this one exercise ever again, It would be awesome:

Everybody knows I hate two things: Bike and Wallballs.

If I had to program my own WOD, it would be:

Anything with double unders, pullups and power cleans or power snatches.

Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, hobbies, etc) :

I’ve been married for almost 4 years with Katherin. I met her in Mexico while doing CrossFit. We decided to move to Albuquerque 3 years ago. Our families still live in Mexico and we go every year to visit them.

My favorite cheat meal/food is:

TACOS! And beer.

What is your favorite type of music to workout to?:

One of my best fitness accomplishments was finishing a few half marathons several years ago. November Athletes of the Month: Matt and Kelli

Kelli:

Matt and I are both Paramedics, for a time I worked at Albuquerque while Matt worked (and still does) for Albuquerque Fire Dept. When we got lucky he and I would respond to the same 911 calls. This must have been the fast track, because just a few years later we got married, now have our son Jack, who turned 2 this summer. Matt is currently working for Albuquerque Fire Dept., and I am in school to get my Masters as A Physician Assistant. I was introduced to CrossFit when I was pregnant with Jack 2 and a half years ago. Matt had started CrossFit that year and slowly convinced me to try it after Jack was born. It was the best thing I could have done to not only “get my body back”, but actually create an entirely new/improved body, gain muscle, and changed my whole perspective of working out.

Least Favorite Lift: If i never had to do * snatches* again I would be just fine . If I had to make up a WOD it would be: A lot of cardio. Probably some running/biking, Rope Climbs, and DB snatches.

My proudest accomplishment: Becoming a parent, hands down.

My favorite cheat meal: All sweets, Pazookies are up there on the list.

Favorite song: right now, “Lemon”-N.E.R.D and Rihanna

What I love about Bear Canyon: Good Grief so many things. First the people here are awesome, everyone is very supportive and friends outside of the gym. There is definitely a “family” vibe at Bear Canyon that is unique and hard to find! Also, awesome that they have child care, and 5:30 am classes (shout out to all the early risers that make it possible for me to push myself at that ridiculous hour of the morning!), and last but not least, I have made SO much progress since I started here last fall! Thank you coaches!

@matthew watkins -You are my favorite person to workout with! It’s my favorite date going to Saturday morning workouts with you, especially if it’s cardio . This year has been so fun to watch you crush your old PRs!! You have come such a long way and I know how hard you’ve worked, even with hurdles/injuries/being a parent/sacrificing workout days so I could go...the list goes on. Thank you for being the best swole-mate!

Matthew

Born and raised in the 505. Played football and ran track in high school. Went to southwest regionals in track, NM won it that year which has never happened before or after. (So that’s cool).... went to UNM and got my degree in emergency medicine, met Kelli Watkins in paramedic school and we started dating a year after that. (2013). Joined Albuquerque Fire in 2013, married Kelli in 2015, had Jack in 2016, and now I’m here! I was introduced to CrossFit in 2015 after watching a small part of the CrossFit games. Just so happened that I started working with John Longdon during that time. He made me do one of his workouts at the station, and I almost died. I started going to the gym with him and became hooked.

Least Fav CF Movement: I hate high reps with light weight snatch!!!!!! Hurts in a bad way.

My WOD: For time
400m run
21,15,9
Thrusters
Bar facing burpees
115/85

I have a few big accomplishments that are in chronological order.
1. Graduating college.
2. Getting accepted into AFR.
3. Graduating the cadet program.
4. Proposing to Kelli
5. Marrying Kelli
6. Becoming a dad.

Favorite food: Burgers, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and chocolate milk!

Favorite song: that’s tough,  but Pop Style by Drake is dope during a workout.

Bear Canyon is just a fun place to workout in! Awesome community and great coaches! The majority of my CrossFit accomplishments have come during my 10 months at BCCF. 220lb snatch, 315 clean, 300lb jerk! Things I thought would never happen! Can’t thank you guys enough!

@Kelli Watkins is a legit badass!! She out works me in every part of life! Better spouse, better parent, better athlete, better student and much more healthy than I am!  Her intensity in life is what motivates me! I also hate doing cardio workouts with her because I know in order to not lose I have to go all out, and that scares me!

October 2018 AOTM: Samantha Jaramillo

I am new to living in Albuquerque, I’ve been here just a little over a year. I moved here from little old Las Cruces. I am a wife to Matthew Jaramillo and mother to three pretty little ladies...ZyAnna, Maddison and Sammie! I worked with Dona Ana County before moving out here and upon moving here, I worked with Bernalillo County and the State of NM prior to deciding I should stay home for awhile, while my girls and I adjust to the new city and over all, new life! I enjoy working out, playing basketball and volleyball, going to the movies, socializing, and taking country cruises to admire all the beautiful things God created and of course, being with my family!

How I was introduced to CrossFit: I was initially introduced to CrossFit last year in May 2017, by a former basketball coach of mine from 8th grade. She (Michelle Allen) never, ever gave up trying to get me to CrossFit with her! I kid you not, she tried for years! One day, after having been doing 9 Round Kickboxing for a year I was ready for something more challenging. I hit up Michelle and BAMMM!! One WOD & just like that I became a CrossFitter por vida! Haha! Huge shoutout to Michelle for introducing me to this sport that I can’t seem to get enough of!

If I never had to do this one exercise ever again, It would be awesome: WALL BALLS!!! I mean, who needs to do wall balls anyway, right?! Haha!

If I had to program my own WOD, it would be: Weightlifting: Squat Cleans WOD:Power Clean & JerksBox jump oversFront squats

My favorite cheat meal/food is: Well! Well! Well! I’d have to say it’s Peter Piper Pizza & the desserts are endless! Haha!

What is your favorite type of music to workout to?: Not country music! Haha! I like to workout to hip-hop and some rap, “Okuuurr!”

My proudest accomplishment is: I’d have to say that despite how hard I am on myself in the gym, I have had tons and tons of accomplishments in CrossFit! Every single time I go up in weight, or move on to the next progression of a certain exercise, every time I PR, etc...it’s A HUGE accomplishment to me! Aside from CrossFit, being a good wife and mother have been huge accomplishments to me. Anyone can get married and have kids, it’s takes guidance and strength from God to be the wife and mother your family needs.

What I love about Bear Canyon Crossfit: What I love about Bear Canyon CrossFit huh?! I absolutely love this box and everything about it. The coaches, the programming, the facility and more so than anything, the COMMUNITY! I love that I look forward to my workouts everyday. We work hard and we have fun doing it! I represent Bear Canyon CrossFit with pride and I am completely honored to have been given this opportunity to be AOTM. I look forward to many more years of growth and gains with all of you BAD ASS BEARS!

September 2018 Athlete of the Month: Shanda

How I was introduced to CrossFit: A friend that I do personal training with said that I’d love it because of my love for lifting weights.

If I never had to do this one exercise ever again, It would be awesome: Running! I hate running more than anything on this earth. I would rather do 3000 burpies than run 1 mile.

If I had to program my own WOD, it would be: Squats, squats, and more squats. (yay)

A little about Shanda : I’ve been a pediatric hematology/oncology nurse for 10 years and feel like caring for kids with cancer has really made me realize how much petty things don’t matter and how important it is to appreciate your health and your family.

I have three kids ages 1, 4, and 15 who, for the most part, make me feel like I’m hostage negotiating with a band of drunken bi-polar pirates and strangely, I love it! I’m obsessed with those little pirates of mine!

I recently got my Master’s degree in nursing and plan on starting school for my doctorate soon. I love eating, relaxing on a beach with a strong drink, pool bars, playing craps, skiing, fantasy football, the Cowboys, and shooting potato guns with my friends. I dream of sitting on the back of a truck by a river while listening to country music, drinking tequila, and playing in the water with good company…

My proudest accomplishment is my kids. My uterus did a damn good job making those little nuggets!

At Bear Canyon, I love the hard workouts, the camaraderie, and pure love for moving the body...doing hard stuff with great, inspiring people!

July 2018: Stewart and Brittany Anderson

Britt:

I started CrossFit 6 years ago after watching my hubby do it for a year.  I was pregnant during that time and was watching him getting fit while I was getting fat ( ; I was always a runner and didn’t think I needed anything else (let’s all laugh now).  Plus, he would come home and tell me about his workouts and I thought it sounded awful.  He made me do a little intro to CF about 6 months after our baby came and then I was hooked.  Fast forward to today and CF is a huge part of our lives and we’re always talking about our workouts to each other!  I couldn’t have (wouldn’t have!) come so far without Stew’s support.  There have been times where I’ve hated him for his “encouragement” to get to the gym when I didn’t feel like it, but then loved him for it ( :  I love it when we get to work out together.  Even better if we get to partner up!

I’m a Midwest girl and grew up in Indiana.  Went to school at Brigham Young University and got a nursing degree, met Stew, got married and we set out to Philadelphia for dental school.  We ended up here in Albuquerque 10 years ago so that Stew could do a residency...we were hooked and decided to stay.  I worked as a nurse in the Philly scene until we started having kiddos but, now, I get to stay home lovin’ on those guys.  We have 4 kids (1 girl, 3 boys) ages 10 down to 3.  They’re no strangers to the CF scene!

We love doing all sorts of things that involve being both active and lazy; sports, hiking, games, movies, eating, spending time with family.

My proudest accomplishment is my kids.  Truly.  They’re great kids.

I love working out to songs from the 90’s.  Someone put on a station called “jock jams” one day at the gym and I loved it.

Favorite cheat meal.  Seriously, I have to pick just one?!  Fine.  Sushi ‘til my eyeballs pop out.

Least fav movement: I’d be happy if I never had to do jerks. I’m always limited by my jerks.

A WOD made just for me would have cleans, running and kettlebells.  Is someone going to program that for me since I’m Athlete of the Month?? ( ;

We came over to Bear Canyon CrossFit almost 2 years ago. Initially it was for schedule and distance and friends, but we’ve really grown to love the community here and are happy to be a part of it.

Stew:

Athlete of the Month June 2018: Edward Baswell

Intro to CrossFit: Around 2006, after I retired from the USAF, I started doing contract work in Iraq and Afghanistan. We were just starting to learn about CrossFit. We would go to the CrossFit website, watch the videos, and try and replicate the WODs. The conditions were pretty austere, but it was a lot of fun. I spent the next several years journeying between “do-it-yourself” CrossFit and trying to be Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu guy. I joined my first box in 2015 and haven’t looked back.

If I never had to do this one exercise ever again: HSPU’s, which is kind of a misnomer since I can’t do them anyway. I hate that I can’t do them, but I hate working on them, too.

If I had to makeup my own WOD, it would be: I like chipper WODs and body-weight stuff, so it would be something like:

100 Air Squats
75 Double-Unders
50 Push-ups
25 GHD Sit-up
15 Pull-ups
30 Min AMRAP

I was born in Atlanta, GA, grew up in Asheville, NC (my parents moved there when I was 5), joined the USAF in 1984, and retired from active-duty in 2006. I lived most of my adult life in Florida, but I’ve also lived in Germany, Kentucky, South Korea, Fairbanks, Alaska and Los Angeles, CA. I have two children, a 27 year-old son who’s a Sergeant in the Army stationed at Ft. Hood, TX, and a 23 year-old daughter in St. Louis, MO. Both my kids also do CrossFit.

I moved to Albuquerque in 2014. I live with my girlfriend, Beth and her daughter, Sabrina in Sandia Park. Beth and I both work at Sandia National Labs.

When I’m not at work, I like to bike, hike, and skateboard. I’ll surf if I’m near the water. I used to be a halfway decent stand-up paddle surfer.

My proudest accomplishment is: I’ve had a fortunate life, but I believe my proudest accomplishment would have to be earning my Bachelor’s degree in 1996, followed by my Master’s degree in 2000. These were the rewards of going to school part-time from 1989-1999, eleven years of balancing work, deployments, family, and school. I still wonder sometimes how I managed to pull it off.

My favorite cheat meal/food is: I have a terrible sweet tooth. I love candy. Jelly Belly jelly beans…<3
And Pizza. And Beer…

What is your favorite music to workout to?90’s Grunge or Heavy Metal (especially 80’s Hair Metal…Motley Crue, GnR, Ratt, Cinderella, etc.)

November 2017: Jake Schwyzer

How I was introduced to CrossFit:

A group of friends had been going to Black Box for about a year and I finally caved.  Could barely hold myself up on a couple of boxes and was so sore that sleeping was a challenge!!  Haven’t stopped crossfitting since…2011

If I never had to do this one exercise ever again, It would be awesome:

That one is hard to answer…every workout is a challenge for me, and while I am doing it I hate whatever movement it is!!! Always happy when I am done. Anything that involves one leg (PISTOLS, LUNGES etc) are extremely hard for me.

If I had to makeup my own WOD, it would be:

My family includes my wife Kim (for those of you that know me she deserves an awardJ) a 5 year old Lylah and 2 year old Joseph.  My family is the bulk of my life.  I am a glorified sales guy in the dental equipment space.  Former badass soccer player…JKJ….all soccer players struggle with crossfit for some reason…no mobility at all!!! Jon and Megan Bender

Jon:

How I was introduced to CrossFit: I first tried Crossfit in Afghanistan. My XO and I would find crossfit workouts online, replace the movements we were terrible at (Snatches/Overhead Squats), and do the workouts in the 100+ degree heat.  After I got back, I didn’t do crossfit for about 2 ½ years, until Megan decided she wanted to try it about a year ago.  Now I’m hooked.

If I never had to do this one exercise ever again, I would be stoked: When I win the Crossfit Open, I’m using my Executive Power to outlaw Double-Unders

If I had to makeup my own WOD, it would be: 1-mile Then 2-Rounds of 29 Deadlifts, 84 bar-over-burpees1-mile

Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, hobbies, etc): I’m married, we have no kids, 5 animals (2-dogs/3-cats), and sometimes I’m a bit of a jokester.  My hobbies include crossfit, headbands, and posting countless photos of our dogs on social media (Wiener Wednesday). Sports are cool to watch on TV, but I regularly fall asleep on the couch around 8:30pm.

My proudest accomplishment is (doesn’t have to be CF related): When I was in 6th Grade, I came in 2nd place in my school’s Spelling Bee.  So either that, or my deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan.

My favorite cheat meal/food is: A big pile of Nachos

What is your favorite song to workout to?: Any song used in a “Rocky” montage.

What I love about Bear Canyon Crossfit: The People. When people say crossfit is a cult, I tell them “yeah, but it’s a friendly cult”. The people at Bear Canyon are some of the most supportive, motivating, and interesting people I have ever met.

Your "swole mate": She’s (Megan)pretty much the greatest thing to ever happen to me.  She’s smart, beautiful, funny, and the progress she’s made over the last year in doing crossfit and barbell makes me extremely proud of her.  I’m also slightly terrified that if I ever had to go out of town for a prolonged period of time, she’d adopt more animals and fill our house with dogs and cats.

Megan:

How I was introduced to CrossFit: I’d heard about crossfit but had never gave it a chance. Ivonne Lobo and Falisha Plake kept telling me about BCCF and how great it was and I eventually gave in one day and have been hooked ever since!

If I never had to do this one exercise ever again: Hmm…Burpee Box Jumps I would be stoked: If I had to makeup my own WOD, it would be: AMRAP: 15 Wallballs, 15 power cleans or 10 Cleans, 15 TTB or anything with squats really.

Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, hobbies, etc) : I was born and raised in Albuquerque. I’ve been married to Jon for 8 years! I’m a Staff Accountant at the Gap Corporate Office and am a crazy animal lover. I LOVE going to Barbell and crossfit. And of course I love all of my furbabies and love spending time with them (and Jon too)

Your "swole mate": My swole mate is my better half. He’s probably the kindest, most caring, funniest person I know. He’s always so positive and patient and knows how to bring me back down to earth on my worst days. He also accepts the fact that I’m eventually going to bring home more animals and that we’re gonna have to buy a bigger house so I can save animals all the time!

What I love about Bear Canyon Crossfit: I like how challenging the programming is. I also like the people, coaches and athletes are supportive.

April 2017 Athlete of the Month: Ryan Sanders

How I was introduced to Crossfit: I started cross training 17 years ago at UNM before Crossfit was trademarked. At that time, there were no open-to-the-public gyms with the equipment and the trainers needed to allow an olympic lifting/HIIT/gymnastics/calisthenics mix. I was lucky enough to have such workouts as required training. After school, I struggled mightily to maintain my training in a standard, iron-only gym. No one was telling me what to do. I wasn't training very hard. Hell, I reached the point where I told myself squats were no longer good for me. Fast forward to 2013, Crossfit moved mainstream (at least, mainstream to New Mexico, which is always at least five years behind everyone else in the country). I became aware of gyms near me that would allow me to lift functionally heavy, jump on a box, or complete a circuit without interruption. I dropped in at Cantina Crossfit. Too small (before they moved). I dropped in at Crossfit to the Bone. Paul Fastnacht had a nice facility with good equipment within five minutes of my house. I was hooked. Someone told me what I had to do every day. All I had to do was get to the gym and lift heavy every day.

If I never had to do this one exercise ever again, I would be stoked: Everyone says burpees. I hate burpees and burpees hate me. But I would never say I'd be stoked to never have to do another burpee. Burpees challenge me mentally as well as physically. Everyone in my house does their birthday burpees, including my five year old. When you see me doing burpees, yes, I am miserable. Yes, I don't want to do any more. But I will do them. Every one.

If I had to make up my own WOD, it would be: "Sanders" - 5 Rounds for time - 15 box jumps (24/20), 10 OHS (95/65), 5 Snatch (135/95).

Tell us a little about yourself: I have been married to my wife, Samantha, for 12 years. We have two smart and strong girls, Rylee (8) and Addison (5). We love the outdoors (camping, skiing, fishing, beach-ing). As a former UNM baseball player, I hate-like Lobo athletics. Spring is the best time of the year because you can ski in a T-shirt and watch opening day baseball on the same weekend. Oh, to the "Tell us a little about yourself," may as well add that I am an attorney (a little self-promotion/advertising).

My favorite cheat meal/food is: Can it really be considered a cheat meal/food if you eat it four times a week? Ice cream. Anything with chocolate chips. Add chocolate syrup and whipped cream.

What is your favorite song to workout to?: My Apocalypse - Metallica. Close second, anything but Linkin Park.

What I love about BCCF: I love that the owners are present. Amy, Rebekah (and, yes, Mark, even you), you guys put your time in, and I appreciate your commitment. You also have turned the facility into a first-class gym. You put money back into the gym. It seems like every week we have new equipment. Finally, I dig the programming. Whoever is in charge of programming should get a bonus. (You owe me a drink, Mark. And not just a free one from your bar.).

MARCH ATHLETE OF THE MONTH- MARK EYTCHESON

How I was introduced to CrossFit:
My wife saw how much I disliked going to the regular gym and got me a groupon for a crosfit gym because she thought I'd really like it.  She was right (as always)!

If I never had to do this one exercise ever again, I would be stoked:
Burpees or any combination thereof...

If I had to makeup my own WOD, it would be:
Wall balls, rowing, deadlifts

Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, hobbies, etc) :

I moved back to NM in 2006 to work for my brother's software company after living on the East Coast while in the Coast Guard for 10 years. I've got an awesome wife and a 7 year old son and 3 year old daughter.  I love playing golf when I get the chance and I used to coach high school basketball. I'm currently starting the portion of parenthood where you are constantly shuttling kids to soccer.

My proudest accomplishment is (doesn’t have to be CF related):
Probably getting into the Coast Guard Academy.  As a kid from New Mexico, I had no idea what the Coast Guard was or did, but it was a chance for a free education, play basketball in college, and a guaranteed job.  It was really hard, but extremely rewarding.

My favorite cheat meal/food is:
Pizza+Beer

What is your favorite song to workout to?:
Anything by the Ramones

What I love about Bear Canyon Crossfit:
The coaching.  I've improved so much since I started coming to Bear Canyon and it is all because of the coaching.  Every class I've ever been in here, the coach will notice something I could be doing more efficiently or my correcting my form, or helping me with a movement that I struggle in.  You can approach them for extra help and they are always willing to take time out to assist you.  The coaches are the best and the member are all so supportive!

Sarah Hoverson- January Athlete of the Month

When did you start at BCCF ? November 2015

Why did you choose BCCF ? I knew Mark through a friend; I came to check it out one day and loved how big and clean it was, and everyone was so nice and inviting, which was so different from traditional gyms.

What do you like best about BCCF ? The coaches! They do a great job of both teaching and  pushing you to work hard, while keeping you safe and injury free. They are all so knowledgeable but also friendly and make it a fun environment

What are your future CrossFit goals? Continue to work on my weaknesses and gymnasty movements and compete at the RX level

What do you feel is your greatest CrossFit accomplishment, and how has BCCF helped you achieve this?  Winning 1st place at the in-house comp in December; this was exactly a year after I started and it was amazing to see the progress I made from staying consistent and pushing myself past my comfort zone.

March 2018 Athlete of the Month: Kayla Minser

How I was introduced to CrossFit:

I started CrossFit when I was living in Indiana attending grad school. I realized that I needed a change in my routine and needed to get healthier. I had a friend back home who had suggested I try CrossFit, so I went to the closest CF box and tried a class. I remember the WOD vividly: 4 rounds of 400 m run and 15 power cleans. I struggled and was the last to finish...but I also signed up for a membership right after that. The rest is history!

If I never had to do this one exercise ever again, I would be awesome:

Power Snatches

If I had to makeup my own WOD, it would be: Something with power cleans, wall balls and pull ups

Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, hobbies, etc):

I work at a nanobiotechnology company that is working on an early cancer detection platform. In school I studied mechanisms of breast cancer metastasis, and I'm extremely passionate about finding new cancer treatment and detection modalities. I have a wonderful fiance named Craig and we're gearing up for our wedding in June. Our furbaby is one of the best things in my life. He's a cuddly 100 lb rotweiller/chocolate mix named Sarge. In my spare time I love to go hiking and backpacking and love to fish as well.

My proudest accomplishment is (doesn’t have to be CF related):

Graduating with my Master's degree. But second to that - I took a 27 mile backpacking trip through Montana last summer and that was a huge accomplishment for me.

My favorite cheat meal/food is:

Its hard to choose one...I love ice cream and brownies and I will go to the ends of the earth to get a good Reuben.

What is your favorite song to workout to?:

Anything Carly plays usually does the trick

What I love about Bear Canyon Crossfit: BCCF is my home away from home. The support, love and laughs at BCCF are irreplaceable and truly something special.

February 2018 Athletes of the Month: Peter and Christy

CHRISTY:

How I was introduced to HIIT/Crossfit:

Pete had been crossfitting for a few years and I had zero interest in it.  One day he told me about a new class, XY, and they were offering a free trial week.  I decided to try it.  That was my first time meeting Mark and Amy.  I met Mark dressed as Pooh and Amy as a 90’s aerobic workout chic, good times…..Halloween WOD.  After a few months, these two convinced me to give crossfit a try and I have been hooked since.

If I never had to do this one exercise ever again, I would be just fine:

Overhead squats for sure, with snatches being a close second.

If I had to makeup my own WOD, it would be:

I have been digging the partner WODs lately.  The one a few weeks ago with slamballs, box jumps, wall balls, knees to elbows, KB swings, burpees and running was fun.

Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, hobbies, etc):

Pete and I are both from Pueblo, CO. We met in high school and were married after college graduation. There is a lot of teeth talk that goes down at our house as he is a dentist and I am a dental hygienist.  We lived in Cleveland for four years while Pete went to dental school and moved to Albuquerque in 2008.  Albuquerque is our home now as he owns two dental practices, one in NE heights and one in the SW part of town.  We have 4 littles; the oldest is a 9-year-old girl and then three very busy boys who are 7, 5 and 2.  I get to stay home with these little people and am able to clean teeth in one of our offices one day a week. There is no time for hobbies at that point, but I do love to travel.  When Pete and I get to escape by ourselves we are usually kayaking, hiking, paddle boarding, or camping somewhere new in the US.

My proudest accomplishment:

I wouldn’t say proudest, but I have accomplished the task of being a busy Mom of 4 while creating a healthy lifestyle for my family and making the gym happen 4-5x/week.  Oh yeah, and pull-ups :)

My favorite cheat meal/food:

Just one?!?! A good steak! A good burger! Brownie and Ice Cream! Pizza!

Favorite Song to work out to:

Anything but rap ;)

What I love about BCCF:

Bear Canyon Crossfit has surpassed any and all of my expectations in a gym.  I never thought that I would still be here almost 2 ½ years later.  If it weren’t for the amazing owners, coaches and members, I would still be fantasizing about running a 5k and doing A pull up.  Mark, Amy and Rebekah are three of the hardest working people I know and I am proud to call them my friends.  The coaches at BCCF push you, help you set goals and help you achieve them.  Also, something I have never been good at.  The members are amazing and I am grateful to have met so many fun, new friends over the years.  Getting to work out with these people and seeing familiar faces in every class we come to, makes it feel like home.  Thanks and way to go BCCF!

My “swole” mate:

Is Pete.  I do love working out with someone that has come so far in crossfit, has many personal achievements and motivates me to be better.  He’s great and fun to sweat with!  We only work out together once a month, maybe twice if we are lucky.  Before we start hashing out the work, teeth and kid talk, we always talk about our workout from the day.  On many levels, this probably keeps us from fighting and keeps our marriage going in the right direction ;)

PETER:

How I was introduced to HIIT/CrossFit:

It took about two years of Stew Anderson prodding me to do it. Finally, when I heard that they were opening a box on Eubank and Osuna I decided to try it out. (2013)

If I never had to do this one exercise ever again, I would be just fine.:

You can keep overhead squats. I don’t need them.

If I had to makeup my own WOD, it would be:

Running, double-unders, pull-ups, sit-ups, wall balls, and burpees. Something long and for time. I like low weight/high volume.

Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, hobbies, etc) :

Christy and I have been married for 14 years. We have four kids (one girl and three boys) between the ages of 9 and 2. We started dating in High School and both ended up getting into Dentistry (Dentist and Dental Hygienist). My favorite hobbies are mountain biking and skiing- though I don’t have much time to do either.

My proudest accomplishment is (doesn’t have to be CF related):

I always struggled with weight. About the time I started CrossFit, I started eating better and began to enjoy exercising. I’ve lost over 50lbs, kept it off, and feel strong.

My favorite cheat meal/food is:

Pizza and Ice Cream!!

What is your favorite song to workout to?:

Rock and Roll- the good stuff.

What I love about Bear Canyon Crossfit:

BCCF has definitely helped me to improve my life. I really enjoy belonging to such a great community of people who share similar goals and attitudes. The owners, coaches, and members have become friends who I enjoy spending time with every day (even at 5:30am).

My swole mate:

Christy and I are partners in just about everything; marriage, kids, dentistry, business, and now CrossFit. When we are both exercising and feeling healthy our relationship is better. We support each other in our efforts to eat clean and become stronger. Our favorite CrossFit workouts are partner WODs that we get to do together. We’ve also both discovered that we may be a little competitive- especially against each other.

❤️

January 2018 Athlete of the Month: Andrew Robinson

How I was introduced to CrossFit:

My wife and I tried Cantina CrossFit many years ago (back when they were next to Papa Murphy’s) to see what it was all about. Didn’t click with us and we threw in the towel after a week or two. Fast forward to this past summer, I was looking for something different from the normal gym routine and a place that had early-morning classes to fit my schedule. I’ve driven by BCCF many times and decided to give it a shot. I’ve been hooked ever since.

If I never had to do this one exercise ever again, I would be stoked:

Box jumps of any variety. I’ve seen too many YouTube videos of box jump failures to make that exercise enjoyable.

If I had to make up my own WOD, it would be:

3 minutes single unders

21-15-9:

Power snatches

Russian kettlebell swings

Ab-mat situps

3 minutes single unders

Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, hobbies, etc.):

I am originally from Philadelphia and moved to Albuquerque about 7 years ago for work as an engineer. My wife and I have a beautiful daughter that is 14 months old. She keeps us both pretty busy, but in my spare time I play ice hockey in a local rec league. I also enjoy playing golf and swimming, especially open water swimming (not a lot of options in NM, so I travel to get my fix). An avid sports fan, I follow my hometown teams (Flyers/Phillies/Eagles) as well as my alma mater, the Purdue Boilermakers.

My proudest accomplishment is (doesn’t have to be CF related):

My daughter. As for fitness accomplishments, I swam a 5K race in Lake George and podiumed in my division.

My favorite cheat meal/food is:

Ham and cheese hoagie with a Philly soft pretzel for dessert

What is your favorite song to workout to?:

Anything 90’s alternative/grunge, Metallica or Pepper

What I love about Bear Canyon CrossFit:

Everyone at BCCF has been so welcoming and so helpful. From the owners, to the coaches, to the athletes I sweat beside during workouts, just a really good group of people. Waking up early to get your butt kicked is rough, but BCCF makes it enjoyable.
